Bolillos (Mexican bread) for dipping

Menudo is often celebrated as Mexico’s most famous hangover remedy, and it truly lives up to its reputation. More than just a cure, it’s the dish that unites families the morning after a festive event or wild party. This hearty stew, crafted from offal meats, is both spicy and infused with a hint of ginger, making it great for digestion. In our family, we would traditionally enjoy Menudo on Sunday mornings, followed by tacos de tripas and, for dinner, refreshing shrimp cocktails or ceviche.

While many savor their Menudo with tortillas, some prefer to pair it with crunchy tortilla chips. My sister’s husband, hailing from Chihuahua, has an unusual preference—he enjoys dipping bolillos (a type of Mexican bread) into the soup, which had us all raising our eyebrows the first time we saw it! My mom always emphasizes that the secret to a flavorful Menudo lies in using all three types of tripe along with the hoof. Whether you love it or find it challenging, there’s no denying that we crave this delicious dish!
